What makes Gemini CLI different

Google's open-source terminal agent; now for Code Assist and paid API users.

  1. 01

    Extensions

Installable packages of prompts, MCP servers, commands, hooks, subagents and skills, with a public gallery.

Use it for: Adding a ready-made integration for a database or cloud tool.

    How to start

    1. Browse the extension gallery at geminicli.com/extensions
    2. Install one with gemini extensions install followed by its GitHub URL
  2. 03

    Checkpointing

Saves a snapshot of your project before AI file edits, so /restore can undo them.

Use it for: Trying a risky refactor and rolling back if it fails.

    How to start

    1. Turn it on in settings.json: general > checkpointing > enabled: true (off by default)
    2. Run /restore to list checkpoints, then /restore <checkpoint_file> to go back
    3. Or type /rewind (or press Esc twice) to go back to an earlier step
  3. 04

    Gemini CLI GitHub Action

Runs Gemini CLI in GitHub workflows for pull request reviews, issue triage and @gemini-cli requests.

Use it for: An automatic first-pass review on every pull request.

    How to start

    1. Get a Gemini API key and store it as a GitHub secret named GEMINI_API_KEY
    2. In Gemini CLI, type /setup-github to add the workflows to your repository
    3. Mention @gemini-cli in an issue or pull request
